Gynecomastia in Philadelphia, PA
Located in Bala Cynwyd and serving Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maple Shade, New Jersey, and the surrounding area, The Falcone Center for Functional, Cosmetic and Integrative Medicine offers gynecomastia treatments to residents interested in cosmetic surgery.
The Basics Of Gynecomastia
Each year, more than 200,000 males are diagnosed with gynecomastia, or swollen male breast tissue, which is generally caused by an imbalance between the hormones testosterone and estrogen. The good news is that, other than perhaps slight tenderness, gynecomastia typically isn’t a cause for concern.
Gynecomastia is, however, often a source of embarrassment for teenagers and grown men alike, which is where treatments from the professionals at The Falcone Center for Functional, Cosmetic, and Integrative Medicine might be able to help.
What Is Pseudogynecomastia?
With pseudogynecomastia, fat begins to build up behind, around, and under the nipples, leading to the appearance of enlarged breasts. As the name suggests, pseudogynecomastia is literally “artificial” gynecomastia, and it’s often the case that men think they have gynecomastia when in fact they have pseudogynecomastia.
What’s the difference? How can you tell?
The Difference Between Pseudogynecomastia & Gynecomastia
As we can see, when it comes to pseudogynecomastia and gynecomastia, the primary difference is that gynecomastia involves the feminization (excessive growth) of male breast tissue, while pseudogynecomastia involves fat, not breast tissue.
As a result, the treatment approach for these two conditions will be very different, which is why it’s important to understand the different options available to you if you’re thinking about addressing your gynecomastia.
What Treatments Are Available For Gynecomastia?
During your consultation with Dr. Falcone, you’ll be able to talk with her about the different gynecomastia options available based on your specific diagnosis. From there, she’ll craft a treatment plan that can address your needs.
In many instances, gynecomastia can go away on its own, especially if you’re experiencing a particular hormonal time, such as puberty. Also, since some medications can cause gynecomastia, Dr. Falcone might recommend that you temporarily stop them and see if you experience any improvement.
If this “observational period” doesn’t improve your gynecomastia, then prescription medication might be implemented. Popular options include clomiphene, tamoxifen, and danazol.
If none of the above options successfully address your gynecomastia, then surgery may be required. Here, traditional breast reduction techniques are implemented, such as making a small incision on the outside of the areola, through which any excess tissue can be removed.
On the other hand, if you only need subcutaneous fat removed due to pseudogynecomastia, Dr. Falcone can insert a cannula through a small incision and use tumescent liposuction.
What To Expect After Your Gynecomastia Treatment
If you require gynecomastia-caused breast reduction, the procedure often takes anywhere between one and three hours, depending on which treatments are implemented and the amount of tissue or fat requiring extraction.
After the treatment is complete, Dr. Falcone will stitch the treatment areas, surgically dress them, and send you home. Depending on the situation, you may be prescribed an oral painkiller.
You’ll need to abstain from physical activity for at least one month following your gynecomastia treatment, and may need to take anywhere from one to two weeks off from work or school*. As with any surgery, you’ll likely experience some pain and lethargy following the procedure, and you can discuss anything else you might be experiencing during your follow up visits with Dr. Falcone.
The cost of male breast reduction for gynecomastia will vary based on your desired needs. Scheduling a no-obligation consultation will be the first step. After careful analysis of your medical history, Dr. Falcone will map out a treatment plan and provide you with a written cost estimate. The Falcone Center for Functional, Cosmetic, and Integrative Medicine uses CareCredit® as a financing partner.
