What is miraDry®?
miraDry® is a revolutionary, FDA-approved procedure to help patients suffering from underarm sweating and odor or the medical condition of excessive sweating called hyperhidrosis. This safe, non-surgical and non-invasive procedure can eliminate the embarrassment that comes along with excessive sweating and do away with the stressful hassle of continual sweat stains that won’t come out in the laundry. Utilizing unique electromagnetic frequencies, miraDry® will effectively destroy the sweat glands under your arm and tackle the root of the problem so that you can live your life more comfortably again.
Benefits of miraDry® for Hyperhidrosis
While results vary slightly from patient to patient, common results following a full miraDry® treatment include:
- Around 80% reduction in sweat and odor under the arms
- Long-lasting results that remain for an average of several years after 1-2 treatments
- Requires little to no downtime or change in your daily routine
- Little to no discomfort during the miraDry® treatment process
What is the Procedure for miraDry® for Hyperhidrosis?
The procedure for miraDry® usually lasts only about an hour. You will typically be given a numbing agent to keep you comfortable as a specialized hand piece sends electromagnetic energy directly to the specific areas of your armpit where the troublesome sweat glands are located. This unique energy effectively destroys the sweat gland at its base, greatly decreasing the amount you will sweat for several years at a time. The procedure is virtually painless, short, and after just one or two visits you should be able to enjoy your results immediately.
Preparing for miraDry® for Hyperhidrosis
You will likely be asked to shave your underarms 2 days before your miraDry® treatment. It is also advised that you freeze 4 small round plastic water bottles prior to your treatment that can be used as ice packs the first day after you procedure. You should arrive to your appointment free of deodorant or any antiperspirants. Any other directions that might pertain to your unique needs will be discussed in full well before your scheduled treatment appointment.
Most patients can return to their normal lives after receiving miraDry® treatment. To minimize swelling and discomfort, it would be best if you applied ice to the treatment area during the first 12-24 hours after your procedure. The easiest was to do this is to freeze 4 plastic water bottles that you can lay under your arms post procedure. Having four frozen and ready will allow you to rotate the bottle as needed. The round nature of the water bottle works far better than an ice pack in contouring to the underarm area.
You may be asked to alter your exercise routine for the first week to ensure the fastest and smoothest recovery. It is normal to experience swelling or soreness for a short time, but it is generally mild and easily treated with ice and over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen.
Some patients may benefit from more than one miraDry® treatment, or multiple treatments over the years to maintain optimal results. Your personal care and treatment plan will all be planned out in advance as you consult with Dr. Falcone and determine the best course of events for your personal needs, goals, and lifestyle.
Is miraDry® for Hyperhidrosis Right For Me?
miraDry® treatments are FDA-approved to treat underarm sweating safely and effectively. While it is not for everyone, as each person’s medical history and general level of health vary, Dr. Falcone is happy to arrange a free consultation with you if are experiencing the following:
- A diagnosis of hyperhidrosis by your family doctor
- Excessive sweating under your arms beyond what is normal
- Underarm odor that persists despite deodorant
- Tired of trying different prescription antiperspirants or short-term injectable solutions, such as Botox®, which don’t give you the long-term relief you are searching for
- Continual embarrassment and wasted money due to the sweat stains that permeate your clothing
Another possible effect of miraDry® is the loss of underarm hair. For most women, this is considered a positive side effect. For some men, they may not like having less underarm hair. This should be considered when contemplating miraDry® treatment.
