What is ACell?

ACell is a biodegradable extrACellular matrix (ECM) derived from porcine bladder endothelial cells. ExtrACellular matrix is a collection of molecules that are released from cells providing structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells. When this protein matrix is injected into the scalp, the body’s own growth factors and healing proteins are recruited to the hair follicles to stimulate their functioning.

Because ACell is porcine-derived (from pigs) patients should consider their therapeutic choices based on personal and religious preferences.

ACell is an FDA approved protein matrix used extensively in wound care to repair and remodel damaged tissues. Use of ACell for hair restoration is considered off-label as the company that makes ACell has not filed for the FDA indication to use ACell specifically for the treatment of hair loss. What has been found clinically is that the combination of ACell and PRP injected the same day can improve the quality of hair by activating dormant hair follicle stem cells for more then a year.

Current use of PRP and ACell for hair loss treatment is based on clinical best practices and standards of care.

What is the treatment and recovery process?

When you arrive at the office, we will take photos of the treatment area. If it is your first treatment, we will review the procedure, risks, and benefits and have you sign a consent form after your questions are answered. Local anesthetic cream will be applied to your arm and scalp. A simple blood draw will be done from your forearm. Please make sure you have eaten something and are well hydrated prior to arrival to assist in the blood draw.

Your blood will process at a rate of 17 minutes per tube drawn. The total processing time can take almost an hour so please bring something to entertain you during this time.

Once the PRP is ready, Dr. Falcone will provide additional anesthesia using the injection of lidocaine into the scalp. It will take between 15 to 30 minutes from the time that we start the injection process until you are ready to leave the office.

You can expect your scalp to feel sore for approximately 48 hours after treatment.

Who should consider the ACell + PRP, Vampire Hair Treatment?

Vampire Hair Treatment offers the opportunity to do something about hair loss early by helping to maintain and improve hair follicles for as long as possible. It can help to slow down or even stop thinning hair.

It is applicable for:

-Patients suffering from more advanced hair loss who are not ready for a hair transplant but want to increase hair density.

-Patients who are considering a hair transplant and want to maximize the result of their transplant by using ACell and PRP pre- and post-treatment to nourish the existing and newly transplanted hair follicles,

-Men and women suffering from hereditary hair loss.

-Patients who have less hair growth in the eyebrow area.

-This treatment can be used in conjunction with treatments such as Rogaine and Propecia but is also a great option for those who want to maintain their hair without using medications.

-Patients who are seeking treatment options for alopecia areata especially if steroid treatment has not helped.

When will I see results?

Because the ACell + PRP, Vampire Hair treatment is stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms, it will take time to see the full effect. Some patients notice new hair growth in as little as three weeks with the sprouting of new hairs typically most visible around the anterior hairline. It may take 3-6 months to really notice the full effect and the improvement will continue for over a year.

How can I maintain my treatment results?

It is important to visit the office every 4-6 month after your ACell + PRP treatments so that Dr. Falcone can assess and modify your treatment plan as needed depending on your treatment response and desired result. To keep your hair growth thriving, it will take assessment and maintenance treatment. You don’t want to wait until the result of your treatment has completely diminished before returning for treatment. If you are experiencing increased hair shedding and decline in hair density, it is time for you to return to the Falcone Center for treatment planning.

How much does an ACell + PRP Hair Treatment does cost?

The cost of treatment will vary based on the rate and extent of your hair loss and the treatment plan selected.

ACell + PRP injections are more expensive then PRP treatments alone as the cost of the actual ACell ExtrACellular Fibrin Matrix is very expensive. In addition, we know that the quality of PRP used in the treatment of hair loss is very important, requiring high concentrations that can only be achieved in a more sophisticated PRP device such as the Magellan TruPRP device we use at the Falcone Center. Technology, product purity and quality do make a difference!

The ACell + PRP treatment takes considerably more time to perform than PRP injection alone which also contributes to cost.

Investment in the ACell+PRP Vampire Hair treatment from the beginning may actually save you time and money in the long run as the combination therapy lasts longer. This is also helpful in terms of planning your treatment within your social and work calendar. Some patients only require one ACell + TruPRP treatment to see significant benefit as compared to three regular PRP treatments sequenced over the course of 12-18 weeks plus more frequent maintenance therapy required with PRP alone.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, cash, and bank checks. Should you need assistance in financing your procedure we accept CareCredit®LendingUSA and Healthcare Financing Solutions payments. The Falcone Center staff can assist you if you wish to apply for financing.
